Die transdisziplinäre Forschung bearbeitet komplexe gesellschaftliche Probleme, indem sie Wissen und Methoden aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Fächern verknüpft und Expertise aus dem gesellschaftlichen Problemfeld einbezieht. Die Autoren beschreiben erstmals systematisch wissenschaftliche Methoden für die dabei entstehenden Integrationsaufgaben und geben Beispiele aus der Forschungspraxis.
